Bolt Description
Hex Head Cap Screw
Hex head cap screws are manufactured to dimensional standards of ASME B18.2.1 and to various material and mechanical standards of ASTM and SAE. The length of a cap screw is measured from under the head to the extreme end of the screw. Standard thread length is two times the diameter plus ¼ up to 6” length and two times the diameter plus 1/2” for screws longer than 6”. Shorter length screws are fully threaded.
Grade 2
A low or medium carbon steel, externally threaded mechanical device 1/4″” diameter or larger, with a trimmed hex head and a washer face on the bearing surface.
Applications
Grade 2 (A307A) Cap Screws are made from low carbon steel that achieve their strength primarily from cold working during the cold forming manufacturing operation. Economical for use in non-critical applications where the fastener is not subject to extreme temperatures or stress.
Grade 5
A cap screw made from medium carbon steel and heat-treated.
Applications
Grade 5 (A449) Cap Screws are medium strength fasteners that achieve their strength from a quench and temper heat treatment and have a greater tensile strength than a Grade2. Yield-to-tensile ratio is the lowest of all heat-treated steels.
Grade 8
A cap screw made from medium carbon alloy steel and heat-treated.
Applications
Grade 8 (A354 GR BD) Cap Screws are the highest strength of standard inch series cap screws and are made from alloy steel and have greater tensile strength than Grade 5. Designed for use in high stress applications.
Stainless Steel
18.8 and 316 stainless steel cap screws manufactured from austenitic alloys. The molybdenum content of 316 stainless steel screws give them a higher resistance to corrosion and superior strength at high temperatures. Common uses for 316 stainless steel screws include exhaust and furnace parts, jet engine parts, pharmaceutical and photographic equipment, pump parts, chemical processing equipment, tanks, and evaporators. It also is used in pulp, paper, and textile processing equipment and any parts exposed to marine environments.
Applications
18-8 stainless steel screws are used in products that require general atmospheric corrosion resistance, such as chemical, food and drug equipment, bearing plates, heat exchanger tubes, pumps and valves.
Carriage Bolt Short Neck
A round head bolt with a short, square shoulder under the head, and a unified thread pitch. The bolt is made from low or medium carbon steel.
Applications
Carriage bolts are designed to keep the bolt from turning when a nut is being tightened. The short neck variety is used in sheet metal where a standard sized neck would create an obstruction.
Hex Head Machine Bolt
Galvanized
A low or medium carbon steel, externally threaded mechanical device, 1/4 inch in diameter or larger, with a trimmed hex head and a hot-dip galvanized coating. A hex bolt does not have a washer face on its bearing surface as does a hex cap screw, nor does it have a machined point. Its body tolerances are not as close as those of a cap screw.
Applications
Designed to be used in highly corrosive environments (coastal locales and heavily polluted atmospheres). May be inserted into an oversized hole and should be assembled with a nut.
Carriage Bolt Ribbed Neck
A round head bolt with a ribbed or serrated shoulder made from low carbon steel.
Applications
For use in soft, ductile metals, wood and plastics to keep the bolt from turning when the nut is being tightened.
Hex Head Tap Bolt
A tap bolt is a hex head bolt with a machined point that is threaded to the head. The length of a tap bolt is measured from the under the head bearing surface to the extreme end of the bolt. Tap Bolts have tolerances similar to those of cap screws and essentially serve as fully threaded cap screws. Tap Bolts available in Grade and Grade 5 steel with a zinc plated finish and Grade 8 zinc yellow plated.
Applications
A307 Tap Bolt: Use in drilled and tapped holes that are threaded full length. Use in place of a stud and a nut.
Grade 5 Tap Bolt: Use to mount motors to machinery; also popular in automotive and truck repair.
Grade 8 Tap Bolt: Use in industries where greater tensile strength is required than can be met by a grade 5.
Stainless Steel Tap Bolt: Use in in environments corrosive to carbon steel and in tapped holes that are threaded full length.
Heavy Hex Structural Bolt
ASTM A325 and ASTM A490 specifications provide for two types, according to metallurgical classification, of high-strength bolts, supplied in diameters from ½” to 1-1/2” inclusive. Type 1 covers medium carbon steel for ASTM A325 bolts and alloy steel for ASTM A490 bolts. Type 3 covers high-strength bolts that have improved atmospheric corrosion resistance and weathering characteristics.
The principal features of heavy-hex structural bolts that distinguish them from bolts for general application are the size of the head and the unthreaded body length. The head of the heavy-hex structural bolt is specified to be the same size as a heavy-hex nut of the same nominal diameter so that the worker may use the same wrench or socket either on the bolt head and/or on the nut.
ASTM A325 Type 1
A heavy hex bolt made of medium carbon steel. The bearing surface shall be flat and washer faced, and the point is chamfered.
Applications
Commonly used in structural steel joints in heavy construction.
ASTM A490 Type 1 & 3
A heavy hex bolt made of alloy steel. The bearing surface shall be flat and washer-faced, and the point is chamfered.
Applications
Used in structural steel joints in heavy construction when greater yield and tensile strengths than those of an A325 bolt are required. A Type 3 bolt is approximately twice as resistant to corrosion as a Type 1 bolt.
Square Head Bolt
A low or medium carbon steel, externally threaded mechanical device 1/4″ diameter or larger, with a trimmed square shaped external wrenching head.
Applications
Offers greater bearing surface for wrenching than hex head bolts.
Plow Bolt
Bolt with a countersunk, flat head, square neck and unified thread pitch, made from medium-carbon steel.
Applications
Used to bolt a leading blade edge to a plow board on heavy equipment like bulldozers, snow plows, road-graders, scoop shovels and agricultural plows.
Grade 8
Plow bolts made from heat-treated alloy steel and providing greater tensile and proof load strength.
Applications
Used to bolt a leading blade edge to a plow board on heavy equipment like bulldozers, snow plows, road-graders, scoop shovels and agricultural plows.
Tension Control Bolt
The Tension Control bolting system has quickly become the most widely used method of tensioning high strength structural bolts. The Tension Control System consists of one each: A325 TC Bolt, A194 2-H Heavy Hex Nut, F-436 Flat Washer. The Tension Control assembly include is enables a cost effective, one operator, single sided installation.
Applications
The ease of use and economic benefits has provided tens of thousands of projects with consistent, reliable, and economical steel connections. The TC bolt is formally recognized by the AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction) and the RCSC (Research Council on Structural Connections) as an approved installation method.
B7 Continuous Thread Stud
An externally threaded fastener without a head that is threaded over its entire length. Studs are typically provided plain without a secondary finish. ASTM A193 Grade B7 threaded studs are manufactured from a chromium-molybdenum steel and are heat treated to develop the desired mechanical strength properties.
Applications
B7 studs are best suited for use in temperatures between 300° – 400° C. Grade B7 is the most common grade of A193 bolts used in construction.
Hex Head Lag Screw
A full-bodied bolt with a hex head, spaced threads and a gimlet point. Driven in with a socket wrench or impact gun. A lag screw can be used with a lag shield, which are concrete anchors that expand near the bottom to hold the shield inside of a drilled hole. Lag shields are made specifically for the installation of lag screws into masonry materials.
Applications
Steel, Electro-plated Zinc: For use in wood in non-corrosive environments.
Hot-Dip Galvanized: For use in corrosive environments.
Stainless: Has superior corrosion resistance to galvanized steel bolts.
Hanger Bolt
Bolt with threads at both ends, lag screw thread and machine screw thread. Standard hanger bolts are intended for insertion into a predrilled pilot hole. The end of the wood thread is designed as a taper which is threaded all the way to the blunt tip. Available fully threaded in steel zinc and 18.8 stainless steel. Also available with a plain center in steel zinc and 18.8 stainless steel.
Applications
Hanger bolts are ideal for overhead applications, such as suspending electrical wiring or sheet metal from wooden structures. Also used in the light commercial and residential construction industry to attach wall-mounted porcelain plumbing fixtures (toilets, sinks, and urinals) to wood framing.
Carriage Bolt
Carriage bolt length is measured from under the head to the end of the bolt including the square neck.
Low Carbon Steel: Round head bolt with square neck and a unified thread pitch. Made from low or medium carbon steel
Hot Dipped Galvanized Steel: Round head bolt with square neck and a unified thread pitch. Made from low or medium carbon steel with a galvanized zinc finish applied
Grade 5: Carriage bolt made from medium carbon steel and heat-treated
Grade 8: Carriage bolt made from medium carbon alloy steel and heat-treated
Stainless Steel: Corrosion and rust resistant
Applications
Low Carbon Steel: The square neck is designed to keep the bolt from turning as the nut is tightened. Available full and partially thread in zinc, black oxide and black zinc finish
Hot Dipped Galvanized Steel: Often used outdoors because of the thicker protective coating
Grade 5: Greater load carrying capacity compared to a low carbon carriage bolt. Available full body with 6” thread, fully or partially threaded
Grade 8: Greater load carrying capacity compared to a Grade 5 carriage bolt. Available fully threaded in plain and zinc yellow finish
Elevator Bolt
Bolt with a wide, countersunk flat head, a shallow conical bearing surface, an integrally-formed square neck under the head, and a unified thread pitch. Made in Grade 2 steel with a zinc plated finish.
Applications
Originally used to attach elevator buckets to a belt in a grain elevator. Elevator bolts are used in a variety of applications wherever head clearance is crucial. The head is not designed to turn, elevator bolts are usually tightened by a hex nut. Length is measured from the top of the head to the threaded end of the bolt. The head size is a large diameter, flush style, which reduces the chance of pull-through.
Step Bolt
Similar to a carriage bolt in bearing surface and square-neck design, but with a wider, lower-profile, round head.
Applications
Preferred for use where wood is bolted down as decking–the larger diameter head of the step bolt will not pull through the soft wood. Smooth, low, rounded head permits unrestricted movement over the surface.
Eye Bolt
An Eyebolt is a bolt with a loop at one end. They are used to firmly attach a securing eye to a structure so that ropes or cables may then be tied to them. Manufactured in carbon or stainless steel, NOT recommended for overhead lifting.
Applications
Also known as nut eyebolts, these are designed for through-hole applications. Use them for routing wire and for other light duty applications.
Serrated Hex Washer Head Flange Screw
Unslotted hex washer head screws with a unified thread pitch and a flange that has serrations on the bearing surface side. Manufactured from Grade 5 medium carbon steel with a zinc plated finish. Also available in Grade 8 medium carbon alloy steel and 18.8 stainless steel.
Applications
Designed for use in applications where loosening forces are present, such as vibration. The serrations grip to the bearing surface so that significantly more torque is needed to loosen than to tighten the screw. The flange provides more strength than a standard machine screw. Eliminates the need for a lock washer or lock nut in certain applications.
Threaded Rod
Produced from cold rolled steel. Rolled threads offer increased strength, uniform accuracy and a higher degree of surface finish than machine cut threads, in addition to being lower cost. Threaded rod can be used with nuts and washers and may be purchased in standard stock lengths or cut to customer specifications. Available in low carbon steel (plain, zinc and galvanized), ASTM B7/B16, 304 and 316 stainless steel.
Applications
Use these for hanging, mounting, and fastening, securing pressure tanks, valves, and flanges.
Anchor Bolt
A headless fastener with a partially threaded shank. A portion of the top unthreaded section of the bolt is bent at a 90 degree angle. Material is ASTM A36C steel 1018/1020. It is recommended that bolts are supplied with nuts that conform to ASTM A194 or A563 Grade A heavy hex nuts and washers that conform to ASTM F436 Type 1.
Applications
Anchor bolts are imbedded in concrete and used to support structural steel columns, light poles, highway sign structures, bridge and rail equipment. Provided in plain finish or hot galvanized steel.
U-Bolt
A U-Bolt is a bolt in the shape of a “U” with machine screw threads on both legs. Manufactured from low carbon steel zinc plated or hot dip galvanized and 304 and 316 stainless steel.
Applications
U-bolts support heavy pipe, tube, and conduit from ceilings, walls, and poles.
BoxBolt™
BoxBolt™ is an expansion anchor for steel that can be used to make connections to structural tube sections. The BoxBolt™ is suitable for use with rectangular, square and circular sections, or other types of steelwork where access is restricted to one side only. The shoulder of the BoxBolt™ is hexagonal, allowing it to be held in position with an open-ended wrench while a torque wrench is used to tighten the core bolt. As the core bolt is tightened the threaded wedge is drawn up inside the body, the fins expand, and a secure connection is made.
