Types of Nuts
When compared with other types of fasteners, the use of nuts and bolts has the advantage that they can be disassembled as needed, while other fasteners such as rivets are designed for permanent installation. Bolts are often used with nuts and washers, where the washer provides an increase in surface area over which the attachment force is applied. There are a variety of different types of nuts that can be used with a bolt, the most common one being hex nuts. Other nut types include:
- Locknuts
- Hex nut
- Nylon nut
- Wing nut
- Heavy hex nut
- Jam nut
- Cap nut
- Flange nut
- Long nut
- Slotted hex nuts
- Flange nuts
- Cap nuts
- Coupling nuts
- Thumb nuts (also known as wing nuts)
- Square nuts
- Panel nuts
- Surface mount nuts
Nuts and bolts can be used to join different materials together including wood, sheet metal, steel, iron, and polymers. In other cases, such as with slotted hex nuts, they can be used with a mating bolt and a cotter pin to securely lock the nut in place.
Common hand tools or power tools are available to use with bolts and nuts, which include socket sets, open-end wrenches, box wrenches, and powered drivers.

An all-metal, one-piece, hex-shaped all metal prevailing torque lock nut with a round collar at its back end. The collar is segmented with opposite slots cut into it above each corner of the nut. When a screw or bolt reaches the collar, the slotted portion expands which created the prevailing torque locking action. Higher temperature use than nylon insert locknuts. The nuts are impact, shock and vibration resistant. Flexlock® Lock Nuts are available in Light Hex Full and Thin Height, and Heavy Hex Full and Thin Height. Light Hex are available in 18.8 stainless steel and steel cadmium and wax finishes, Heavy Hex is available in a steel cadmium and wax finish. |

Grade 5 nuts achieve their strength through cold forming. The proof load of the nut should be greater than the minimum tensile strength of the bolt to ensure that if overloaded, the bolt breaks rather than the nut threads shearing or stripping. Grade 5 finished hex nuts are designed to be used with Grade 5 hex cap screws. Grade 5 finished hex nuts typically have a clear trivalent chromate finish. The marking requirements are covered in SAE J995, Grade 5 are marked with two circumferential lines located 120° apart.

Grade 8 nuts are heat treated to provide a greater level of strength. The proof load of the nut should be greater than the minimum tensile strength of the bolt to ensure that if overloaded, the bolt breaks rather than the nut threads shearing or stripping. Grade 8 nuts are designed to be used with Grade 8 cap screws. A stronger nut can nearly always be used with a weaker bolt, a Grade 8 nut is acceptable for use on a Grade 5 cap screw. Grade 8 nuts typically have a yellow chromate finish. The marking requirements are covered in SAE J995, The marking requirements are covered in SAE J995, Grade 8 nuts are marked with two circumferential lines located 60° apart.

Similar to a slotted nut with the following difference: the slots are cut into a cylindrical portion that is equal in length to the slot depth and slightly smaller in diameter than the hex width. The slots are for the insertion of a cotter pin to secure the nut when used with a drilled shank fastener. Available in low carbon steel and Grade 5 SAE 1010-1022 steel. |

A hex flange nut with serration is a nut that is formed with an enlarged circular base that flares out from the bottom of the nut. When the nut is torqued into place, the bearing surface of the serrated base displaces the material of the mating surface. This forms a locking effect which resists vibrational loosening. The flanged surface will span an oversized hole and provide a more uniform bearing- stress to clamp-force ratio than a finished hex nut and will not gall screw threads.
A large flange nut is available with a base that is 6 to 25% wider than the base of a standard serrated flange nut. Carbon steel nuts are case-hardened to Rockwell HR15N 78-90. Also available in Grade 5 and Grade 8 steel and 18.8 stainless steel. |

Hex nut with an enlarged circular base flaring out from the bottom of the nut. The bearing surface of the flange is smooth with no serrations. Used to span oversized or irregular holes. |
![]() |
A hex nut with two components, a hex nut and a nylon filled collar at its back end. When a screw reaches the collar, the threads and nylon form a tight, frictional fit, restricting movement of the screw when it is subject to vibration. The nylon insert provides reusability. When removed, the nylon relaxes and begins to return to its original shape providing continued use of the locking feature. Designed for applications with temperatures of up to 250°F.
Nylon Insert Locknuts are available in different series/types and materials, including: NE (Light Hex, Standard Height), NTE (Light Hex, Thin Height), NTU (Heavy Hex, Thin Height), NU (Heavy Hex, Full Height), NM (Machine Screw Pattern, Standard Height), and NTM (Machine Screw Pattern/Thin (Jam) Height). Available in steel, stainless steel, brass and aluminum. |

A hex nut pre-assembled with a free spinning external tooth lock washer. The locking action is achieved when the nut is tightened against a bearing surface as the teeth of the lock washer dig into it. The nuts are manufactured from AISI 1008-1020 or equivalent steel; and the washers from 1050-03 or equivalent steel. Also available in 18.8 stainless steel. |

All Metal Hex Lock Nuts are designed to increase the resistance to rotation by developing a “prevailing torque” action between the bolt threads and the nut threads. This prevailing torque action is developed by “crimping” the nut to create added friction between the threads of the nut and the bolt. All metal lock nuts feature a crowned top that is crimped to create the locking feature. This crowned top design is called a “stover” style lock nut. The crimp provides a locking ability and resistance to loosening in high vibration applications.
All metal lock nuts are made to the material properties and strength requirements as per the standard IFI 100/107 for Grade C which is designed to be used on fasteners up to a Grade 8 strength level. |

Rod coupling nuts are used to connect two pieces of threaded rod. Available in low carbon steel, plain and hot dip galvanized finish, grade 5 and 18.8 stainless steel. Hot-dip galvanizing generally adds 2.5 to 5 mils of thickness to the threaded portion of a fastener, so galvanized couplers are tapped oversize to accommodate the added thickness to the corrosion resistant coating on the bolts. |
![]() |
A hex nut with two or three round or rectangular indentations, compressed on to the flat sides of the nut equal distances from each other. The compressions create slightly distorted center threads resulting in a controlled locking action when the threads of a mating part become engaged.
Used primarily with machine screws, low carbon steel bolts and 18.8 stainless steel bolts. It allows for automatic assembly ability to be used either top-up, or top-down. It creates a locking action even without being fully threaded onto its mating screw. |

3-prong tee nuts are used to fasten a metal piece to a component that is made of wood, plastic, or particleboard, or for anchoring wood components to each other. 3 Prong T-Nuts are used mostly in hard materials to minimize splitting caused by prongs. Available in steel zinc and steel black zinc plated. |
![]() |
Low crown steel cap nuts are usually manufactured in two pieces, a hex nut and an acorn-shaped top, with a zinc die cast to form the finished nut. Stainless steel cap nuts are similar in design to the steel nut but made from 304L or an equivalent stainless and can be a one or two-piece style. Available in the aforementioned stainless steel and steel with a nickel plating or black zinc finish and black oxide. Cap nuts are used for decorative purposes or as covers for projecting threads. |
![]() |
A nut with wings which allow the part to be manually turned. Manufactured from carbon steel that is adaptable to the cold-forging process. Available in a zinc plated finish, black oxide and nickel and 18.8 stainless steel. |
